When Everything Changes

Summary

BOUNCE Approach®

When Everything Changes (and I’m Just Trying to Hold On)

I don’t struggle because I’m being difficult.

I struggle because I’m already using all my energy just to stay okay right now. And when people ask me to think about what’s next, my system can’t go there.

I’m not avoiding the future. I’m protecting myself from overload.

What’s happening inside

My body is busy staying safe

Every bit of my system is working to keep me regulated, calm enough, and not overwhelmed.

Asking me to also process change or plan ahead is extra load on a system that’s already full.

When my body feels unsafe, my brain tries to explain it

Thoughts like “I’m going to fail,” “I won’t cope,” “This is too much,” “I need to stay here” — these aren’t predictions.

They come after my body already feels unsafe. The thoughts are a response, not the cause.

The cognitive load is too much

Holding lots of steps, managing uncertainty, predicting outcomes — these all happen at once.

My system says: “Stop. Too much.” That’s not behaviour. That’s biology.

What actually helps

Less load. More safety. Reduce what I’m being asked to hold, and help my body feel secure — before anything else.

When you stay with me, reduce pressure, and help my body settle — I begin to believe: “Maybe I can do this.”
