Tapping Sequence

Summary

EFT/Tapping

What it is
Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), or “tapping,” is a self-regulation method that combines gentle tapping on acupressure points (face, upper body, and hands) with focused breathing and simple phrases. It is often described as “emotional acupuncture without needles.”

Why it works
The tapping provides steady sensory input that signals safety to the nervous system (polyvagal theory). At the same time, naming emotions and body sensations increases interoceptive awareness and helps the brain integrate experience, reducing overload. This combination can calm the survival brain, regulate the emotional brain, and free up the thinking brain. It conserves “spoons” by lowering stress load and helps return the body to the Window of Tolerance.

Research

  • A 2023 Journal of Clinical Psychology meta-analysis reported EFT significantly reduced anxiety and depressive symptoms across multiple studies.
  • A 2022 Frontiers in Psychology trial showed EFT tapping improved heart rate variability and lowered cortisol levels, pointing to activation of the body’s parasympathetic calming system.
  • A 2021 Journal of Evidence-Based Integrative Medicine review confirmed EFT as an effective, low-cost intervention for stress, trauma recovery, and emotional regulation.
